POEM OF THE WEEK!! 7-27/8-10-07 « Thread Started on Jul 19, 2007, 8:36am »
A Walk
Before me stretched this laborious path Well rutted by long past horse and carts Dry and empty gorse grown grass This path a parting of strong coarse hair Combed by the seasons winds, no human sound Just the songs of birds awakening Singing through the sharp and bracken hedge Flying on the wing urging chicks to fledge I listen in the wind, past and present The sound of age old gypsy caravans Children skipping, laughing, playing chase Fading in the never ending distance, I reach the peek of this rolling hill Before me lays the open countryside, clean Smell of damp earth and pollen, I breathe my fill And amble on towards the distant spire A cobbled road, the ancient church of Christ Surrounded by a hewn stone rugged wall The gate, an iron curved bell shaped edifice With a cut glass welcome light Along a twisting cracked stone path, each side Old gravestones leaning, faded epitaphs Toward an oaken brass bound door The glorious entrance, carved angels below a cross Bright quarried shaped briquettes on a diamond floor Edges with growths of bright green moss Rows of polished wooden pews Rest below a high stone vicar's pulpit High above the vestry a kaleidoscope of colours A sacred window, inlayed leaded sculptures Disciples, the Virgin Mother and many others Against the limestone walls, old stone tombs Knights, arms crossed with epitaphs Overhead fierce carved gargoyles in the gloom Across the ancient graveyard against the vestry wall A lions snarling head spouting water from its mouth With a chain and brass bound drinking cup Through a creaking, rusting, church back door Down a cobbled twisting lane Rows of terraced cottages, owned by the church Lived in by the poor.
The Sad Sailor. Poetry by Johan (Andrew Shiston) can be found as a guest poet on the excellent site of writer and published poet JB Stillwater. www.jbstillwater.com Johan voted poet of the year 2007. My book 'A Bay of Skeletons' is now on sale at Author House My new poetry book 'Portland Poetry' is now being published and will be out in the winter.
Nightlife calls me. Through her I am free. It's the only way to be, all caught up in a mystery! Born with full moon fever, I can make you a believer! For I am the moonchild, truly born to be wild!
God in Heaven, Johan! This is incredible, so rich in the detail of its imagery that I felt, even wished, that I was there! Beautiful, quiet, peaceful, even having a feel of the holy and of history. This one was marvelously penned, my friend. Easily one of the best I've ever read here!

Enchanting and precious is this poem Johan, so vivid the description and the tranquil peace "heard". It specially touched my heart because I just returned from a walking holiday in such lonely, peaceful, powerful nature along the Coast of Wales and I know what you talked about. Only I would not be able to write such a great piece of poetry. Ulla
