There is a prison of the mind and that my friends is the very worst kind.
For even in jail they can't stop your thinking, your brain finds food, your soul keeps drinking.
But if the doors inside your mind are shut, life's bound up tight and in a rut.
Your soul is caged and can't fly free, never to become who you want to be.
So though your body may be in the smallest cell, take heart my friend, you're not in Hell.
Hell's created deep inside your head and if you dwell there long, your soul is dead.
Your mind is shackled, your cage is barred, inside you're numb and life is hard.
But cut those bonds and let your mind fly free, be all that you were meant to be.
Eat and drink, nourish your soul, take it all in so you'll be whole.
Don't close your mind, open it to others and never forget that we're all brothers!
Michael "Keep Your Mind Free!" Gallatin
Author's Note - This poem was inspired by the son of a close friend of mine, my college roommate many years ago. This man went to prison for quite a few years because of something he did when he was younger and not as wise. But he kept his wits about him, kept his heart and soul looking ahead and so he matured during those years of being jailed. He's out now (about a month) and this was the first Christmas in a long time that father and son were together. Happy New Year to them both!

A very touching poem Mike and the author's note, it even makes it more moving. the way to wisdom can be very strict and even meandering.. It is good if mind and soul are not broken and new aims can be taken up! Wishing father and son a good New Year by all means! Thank you. Ulla xx

As always you are most kind, also you are not judgmental which is rare. Glad you enjoyed the poem. At this time Jeff and Steve are doing well and spending time with eachother! Namaste, Mike

This has been my philosophy throughout my so called adult life; that there is no freedom of speech but there is always freedom of thought - we ware masks matey - don't we ?

This has been my philosophy throughout my so called adult life; that there is no freedom of speech but there is always freedom of thought - we ware masks matey - don't we ? Most people wear a number of different masks my friend, putting on a new one for each separate situation, person, etc. they must deal with. Only in rare instances with people very, very close to us do we truly "let our guard down" and "be ourselves". Cute how you say "so called adult life". My wife would tell you that I've been a so-called adult for many years! Namaste, Mike
