As we walk these ancient cliffs we are not alone We feel the presence of convict labour That in the dark ages and grim days Only with their hands, moved the stone
Below the cliffs lay the unwanted shale Now washed by the incoming tide In the unused quarries, still square blocks Of limestone, now untouched by time
Tout Quarry, where the carved 'Falling Man' Unused now by a hundred years Among the stone, effigies carved long ago A face, carved with cheeks and falling tears
Through the curved and hard stone paths A throne of stone cut from the living rock A hand built tunnel of blocks of stone Built 1869 by miners, names unknown
Below our feet lay worn old tracks Where carts pulled by tired donkeys' Shale, then tipped down below the cliffs Mounds that defy imagination lay in drifts
This Portland, Dorset's Jurassic Coast Chesil Beach, once a glacier stretching far This island, this place of humble birth Now speaks by her heritage and a stony tear.

I've said this before my friend but it bears saying again. Your knowledge of the history, places, dates and people of your country is impressive and you put it to good use. I can feel the passion you have for this seeping through your words. I truly like the way you write anyway but very much so with this type of piece. Well done! Take care, Mike

This is really breathtaking Andrew, and the stony tear to me appears like a tear-shaped pearl with all the facet of colour and impressions. You are a master of described fascination, thank you and congratulation to the award! Ursula xx

You drench us in your wonderful and historic poetry Andrew. A pleasure to read about your Jurassic Coast, who wants to see movies about long dead creatures when we can read you fabulous regressions in time. Love 2 U K. Ann
