:DThe Love Express
By Kathy Lynn
Darn! I was going to miss the last train to New York City if I didn’t start hustling faster. I could have taken a puddle jumper and gotten there sooner, but I decided to take the train so that I could relax and unwind.. I had just finished a grueling schedule of work shops that I had to attend in Chicago.
Just minutes before the whistle blew and the train started to leave the station I managed to find my seat in the coach department. I had been on the go all week and I felt tried and worn out. I sighed and settled in deeper in my seat and closed my eyes. The rhythm of the train and the sound of the wheels on the track soon lured me into a deep sleep.
I don’t know how long I slept, but when I started to stir with my eyes only partly opened I felt a soft warm fabric on my face. When I finally became fully awake I jumped up startled because I had been resting my head on the shoulder of the man in the seat next to me. I was so embarrassed..
”I am so sorry, I said. “I must have fallen asleep so deeply that I didn”t realize that I leaned against you and put my head on your shoulder. Please excuse me,” I apologized.
The man simply smiled at me and said.”You were sleeping so soundly I hated to wake you , and it really was no bother to have a lovely young lady rest her head on my shoulder. I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the scent from your hair. Which, by the way smells wonderful” He looked at me and smiled and winked.
I didn’t know what to say, so I just nodded and told him that it was kind of him to accept my apology.
Well young lady, I believe that introductions are in order here, after all, you did sleep on my shoulder.” He said smiling. “Why don’t we go to the dinning car and have some dinner and we will be able to get better acquainted”
I was famished and he did seem so nice that I agreed and we walked down the aisle to the next car which was set up with tables and there was even a bar at one end of the car.
The waiter came over and we ordered coffee and as we waited for him to bring it to us, I told him my name was Sandy Larkin and that I lived in New York City. I was on the way home from attending some mandatory work shops and had decided to take the train instead of flying.
He nodded. “I live in Manhattan and I too decided to take the train instead of flying because I thought I could get some paper work done while traveling. My name is Gary Lang and I work for an architecture group located in New York City also. I was on my way home from a job that I had in Chicago.”
As he talked, the waiter brought over the dinner that we had ordered and I noticed that as we ate and talked, I was becoming more and more relaxed with Gary. He was about 6ft. tall with light brown-blonde hair, which would fall over his face as he talked. He was constantly pushing it back with his fingers away from his eyes. He had the most unusual grey eyes I have ever seen. In fact, I have never seen gray eyes and they fascinated me. He must have noticed me staring at him because he snapped his fingers in front of my face and startled me. I could feel my face turn crimson. Gary just tipped his head back and laughed and said that he noticed I was daydreaming and probably didn’t hear a word he had said. Once again, I had been caught doing something and I blushed and just nodded my head and resumed eating my dinner. As we ate he asked me to tell him about myself.
”Well, I said. There isn’t much to tell. I picked up my coffee and took a few sips before I continued. Â?I work for an agency in New York City that helps men, women, and children that are abused. I am like a case worker or counselor to these people. I try and do all I can to get them all the help they need to take care of all their problems. Sometimes, I spend many hours working on my own time because they need my help. Then sometimes, I get in trouble for helping too much.” As I said this, I smiled and shrugged my shoulders. “My friends get after me when they see me overstepping my authority and pull me back to reality.”
Gary listened very intently and nodded his head from time to time. In between he would push his bangs back off of his face. I smiled because he did it unconscienceously.
We had been talking and enjoying ourselves so much that we didn’t notice that the dinning car had emptied out. We seemed to be the only ones left in the car and there were waiters standing in the back waiting quietly for us to leave so that they could finish their work. When we did realize that we were alone, Gary suggested that we leave and let the waiters get their work done. I smiled and agreed.
We went back to our seats and became so relaxed talking to each other that we talked all through the night. The train sped from one town to another, stopping now and then to discharge or take on passengers. Both of us seemed to relax more and more as we talked and discussed our lives and goals we had set for ourselves.
I have never enjoyed traveling home from a work shop as much as I did from this one in Chicago. I really hated to see this trip end because I was becoming very interested in Gary and I realized that I wanted to spend a lot more time with him and wishing this train would never stop.
As we pulled into the station, my heart felt so sad because I figured I would never see this wonderful man again. He must have felt the same way, because he looked sad too.
Just before the train stopped, Gary turned to me and took both my hands.. Looking at me with those beautiful grey eyes, he leaned over and kissed me very gently on my forehead. When he saw I didnÂ?t protest, he leaned down and kissed my lips. It felt like a feather had landed on my lips and then fell away. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the sensations that I was feeling. Gary must have felt the same way because the one kiss turned into another and yet another.
When we got off of the train he asked me for my address and phone number and handed me his card too. He asked me if he could call me and we could go out on a real date. I smiled and nodded yes. In my heart I knew that this could be the start of a wonderful and fulfilling relationship.
It has been a few years since Gary and I were both returning from our conferences on that train. We have had many happy days and nights spent together since then. One year after we met on that train, we were married.
Now on our anniversary each year, we take the train and go somewhere to celebrate. Each year we pick a different destination and not only enjoy each other, but get to travel all over this great country of ours.
Maybe if more people slowed down and took the train instead of always rushing from one place to another they could meet the person of their dreams.. I did.
