There’s a keyhole into yesterday but I’ve never found the key
Yet when I peep through it, I see reflections of how life used to be,
For reflections bend round yesterday and even miss today
As they peep into tomorrow, though they know they cannot stay,
Some things seem unbelievable, and others downright sad
Yet reflections that smile back at me are those that make me glad,
Then I slither back into today where things seem relatively real
Where sun shines warm and moon shines cold, the things I really feel.
There’s a shadow creeping longer as the day is growing short
Or an old remembered perfume that can no longer be bought,
For one is like the other in that their substance is now done
Both the sunrise and the blue skies and their floral scent have gone,
Some thing are so regrettable, and yet so softly serene
Like the remnants of a hawk’s last meal, and feathers on the green,
Then the shadow blends into the night, the day has long since died
The moon took over from the sun, and the sun so softly sighed.
There’s a star that twinkles still, over a hill so far away
Although the tale is often told, it always seems to stay
Within each heart wrapped in each soul, like children as they sleep
And dream of oh so many things the world would like to keep,
From tiny seeds grow mighty trees that bathe the world in green
So wonderfully special is each summer’s verdant scene,
That no poet or no artist could better it with his pen or with his brush
And Christ looks over every soul that sleeps within his hallowed hush…
