The World We Should

Another new year,
will we hold it dear,
can we learn from
our mistakes?

Have we found a way
to a better day,
do we have
what it takes?

Can we change our mind
to be more kind
and let the past
pass by?

Or will we still dwell
in a living Hell
and keep on
wondering why?

Is our God real,
is that the deal
or is He naught
but an illusion?

Will we accept the grace
in every face
or drown in
our confusion?

And what of war,
tell me how much more
of killing
must there be?

How many will die
before we wonder why
and open up
our eyes to see?

Why not look inside,
what is there to hide
behind the color
of your skin?

Isn't it time to ask
to set aside the mask
and see what
is within?

Just recently
it came to me
as I saw
my new grandchild.

What if we changed,
simply rearranged,
now wouldn't
that be wild?

As I looked in his eyes,
devoid of lies,
what I saw within
was good.

And I glimpsed there why
we all must try
to give him
the world we should!
