The cougar, bear and wolf run free upon the land once roamed by me.
White men cheated and they lied as in the clouds our old gods cried.
But they wept in vain though they cried long as told to us in Indian song.
They mourn the treaties broken still and interlopers who came here to kill.
To slaughter buffalo and destroy our dreams as our peaceful world split at the seams.
They called us primitive and said they were grand, come here to take our lives and land.
Sailed from far across the vast, wide ocean to bring death of which we had no notion.
We welcomed them with arms spread wide apart to hold them to our breast and heart.
But hearts they pierced and blood was spilled as a way of life was raped and killed.
Yet ghosts float upon the evening air, war cries of those no longer there.
You may hear them as they sadly cry saying Indian dreams will never die!
Michael "Taku Skan Skan" Gallatin
Author's Note - Taku skan skan is Lakota Sioux and refers to the flow of life force through all living things. "We" called the American Indians a primitive people and yet they were vastly more intelligent in terms of living with the land and the animals that roamed it. I've often wondered who is the more "primitive" people! May the Indian spirit forever live on and find peace!

Mike - I have read so much about American history - and yet I know so little - but (i think) there is ever more evidence that there was life before the American Indian - that they decended from Egyptians (or wherever) ................ I am no expert but find it so intriguing. This takes nothing away from (I hope) the way you portrayed the way we sucked the life from the (then) native Aemericans. luvley stuff and keep em coming .......... by the way ....... John Wayne was good wasn't he? .......

Thank you both! And to rustybroadspear, the following. I heard people thought American Indians were descended from some Asian people, possibly the Chinese. I googled it and a 2009 DNA study determined that "Native Americans were more related to eachother than to any Asian population except for people living close to the Bering straight". And yes, "we" managed to largely decimate a fine people in a period of time lasting about 60 years. President Andrew Jackson put the icing on the cake with the creation of the last and biggest reservation. As for big, bad John he was a Hell of an actor for the action movie genre. Quite the "man's man" considering his real name was Marion! But movies almost always portrayed the Indian as the bad guy, savage killers. And we did much more evil to them than vice versa. For instance, I've read that scalping began with the French. I believe it was in the French and Indian War (silly name since it was French vs. English, help from Iroquois and Huron Indians).
Take care, Mike ;D

i use Indian medicine to help my eyesight. people might think it is disgusting, but your own slyvia has a natural enzyme in it that helps clean your eyes. (for those that do not understnd. I use a clean wash clothe, then I use listerlene to wash my mouth out, then I spit on the rag and wipe my eye balls, then i use distil water to clean out my eyeballs again. i don't trust the stuff used for contacts)
i feel some people do destroy the world for the sake of progress.
much enjoyed. your spirit roamed free in this poem. thank you.

Thanks to you all! Glad you liked this. Not all that disgusting Victor. On a travel show I saw a guy piss on another man's eyes. He was trying to clean out the venom from a spitting cobra! Much more disgusting but God do I hope it worked! Take care, Mike
