Inspired by a Dream:
Crouching down with my two young sons, we spied a miniature hummingbird, barely discernible, sipping sweet nectar from red-budded salvia. The moment was so simple, yet so special--It filled be with exquisite joy.
I met an old woman while standing in line at the local Kroger. She seemed so grandmotherly, I knew she'd enjoy my story. She smiled sweetly. Yes, she said enthusiastically, she'd seen that same small hummingbird, wasn't he magical? Touching my shoulder affectionately she continued, "You know honey, I caught him with a piece of scotch tape and saved him on a piece of fine ivory linen paper."
I wondered how many more memories she had tried to save with scotch tape.

When I was a kid about 16, I shot a Barn Owl with a pellet gun, then tried to mend him back to health. Such a beautiful bird with a huge wing span. Those haunting eyes, I can still see them looking at me. He lived for a few days after. So I can sort of understand Grandma in your story.
I did eventually give up my thirst for bringing animals in for a closer look.

Awww, how sad. I have hit a few dogs, squirrels--I even makes me sad when butterflies get smashed against the windshield!

Liked it up until the surprising end. Changes the story a mite! Well done but poor bird! Sad now, Mike
