Hartselle, AL--For the past 35 years holiday tables all across the continental United States have featured Aunt Grace's famous pecan pies. "Guess you could say we've 'graced' a lot of tables," said Grace Abernathy, the pie's creator, of the small town of Hartselle, Alabama. However, Grace wonders if her pies will ever be the same since the death of her husband of 50 years, Albert Abernathy, in March of last year.
"Albert was the bones of our business," said Mrs. Abernathy, "In the beginning he picked up and cracked and shelled all the pecans. He even shimmied up the trees to shake them down , up until a few years ago. As the business grew he still was out there making sure none of the workers shelled a nasty pecan. They were Albert's pies as much as they were mine.
Albert Abernathy's death has an ironic twist. The 75-year-old succumbed to a heart attack in the very pecan groves that to him were life. His wife says he wouldn't have it any other way. This year , with the help of her many field workers and kitchen staff, Aunt Grace's pies will continue to grace holiday tables.
"I plan on creating a new pie this year in honor of Albert," she said. What will it be? "Well, some many not see the humor in this, but I know Albert will be chuckling up in heaven. I'm going to call it "Uncle Albert's Death by Chocolate Pecan Pie."

Butt3rfly,
Held my interest to the end. Now I don't quite get the significance of the "Chocolate Pecan Pie."

May have been going out on a limb with this one. I wrote it quite awhile ago when I was doing some newspaper writing. (No, this isn't real and no, it wasn't published!)
Have you heard of the dessert "Death by Chocolate" Cake? Well, this is a play on that. She made the chocolate pie in honor of his death - it was supposed to be witty and ironic, but I can see where it may have been a rather subtle and sick joke! LOL

Not that subtle, I got it. Not that sick, merely graveside humor. Albert probably would laugh. A sad story but with a cute punch line. Take care, Mike
