Faeries of the Glen
By Janice Marie
If you look out my back window of my home you will see a huge forest. This home and land belonged to my family for a century. I love to take walks down the worn paths that wind throughout the woods as often as the weather permits.
I awoke early this morning and decided to take a brisk walk through out the forest. My granddad named it the Glen, because in the middle of the forest is a very special clearing. It is so beautiful and no one knows about it but my family.
In the center of the glen there is a very large rock, I love to go there and just sit and enjoy all the beauty surrounding me. Sometimes I will sit there for hours and just daydream.
I must have been so absorbed in what I was thinking that I never noticed that I was not alone. I looked up and saw what appeared to be at least a hundred different faeries. They all were flying around in all directions and looked like small bright lights. They reminded my of the fireflies I had seen all my life in these woods. They seemed to come out of nowhere. I must have looked silly with my eyes open so wide and my mouth dropped open to my chin, As they circled around me they were giggling and smiling. How lovely they looked! A multicolored rainbow circling around me. I sat there transfixed by all the beauty before my eyes.
It was still slightly dark in the glen and it looked so lovely as they flew everywhere. Some even landed on my shoulders and when I put out my hands they gently landed on them too. How beautiful they looked. Silver wings glowing and some had small gowns on of all different colors. The boy ones had little shirts and pants on and funny tipped shoes too.
How happy they all seemed to be and their voices were like small melodies. It sounded like music when they talked. They flew around and played and giggled and others just found someplace to rest and sat down.
Then as if on some special signal they all got very quiet and I could hear a very faint music coming from inside the forest. It seemed to get louder and louder. I turned my head in the direction from where I heard it coming from. I could see what appeared to be about ten beautiful faeries approaching and in the center of them radiated a glow like I have never seen before in my life. There were shooting lights like stars in the sky. All the colors of the rainbow and so brilliant I had to shade my eyes.
As they approached the faeries in the glen got very quiet and all of them stood up and bowed their small heads as this entourage entered the opening in the glen. I knew that who ever was in the middle of those faeries was a very important faerie.
When they reached the clearing they opened up more and in front of my eyes was a beautiful faerie. She was taller than the rest, with long flowing hair of red. Her wings were a glowing, flaming red and their bright light was so beautiful I was transfixed by this glorious sight. A flowing silky gown of red that sparkled in the early light.
She flew up and fluttered her wings in front of me but safely away . I smiled. I would never hurt anyone much less a defenseless small faerie. She smiled back at me so I extended my hand and she flew onto it. She felt so light just like a small feather had landed.
She tilted her pretty head and in her small musical voice simply said”Hello”. She said her name was Lu as she extended her pretty little hand out for me to take in mine. How tiny it was. I felt like I was holding a little flower.
She noticed that I was looking at her red colored wings and the way the morning sunlight made them glow so bright. She asked if I would like to touch them, but to be very careful. I slowly reached with one finger and gently felt this beautiful silky and tiny wing. How thin and delicate they felt.
I was so afraid to damage them but she only smiled and said that though they looked delicate and fragile they were quite strong. They had to be able to hold up to the weather and not break or rip.
So gently she spoke. It was hard to hear her soft voice and with her Irish brogue it sounded so soothing and nice. I had to tell her to slow down talking because I was not used to hearing that thick brogue. Again she smiled at me. Her small beautiful faerie eyes twinkling.
She started walking up my arm, while I used my other hand to protect her from falling. Although I shouldn’t have worried, after all she does have wings.
She said,”I am the Faerie Princess and I have come especially to meet you and to thank you for letting my faeries live in your beautiful glen.” She then said,” You must promise us one thing. You must never tell anyone we are here as they will come and we will have to flee and find another safe place to live.” “Can you do this for us?” She said.
I nodded my head and said,”Yes I can.” “I will never tell anyone about this glen and that you all are living here.”
Then the Princess held out her hand and another faerie placed a gold wand in it and it started to glow brighter and brighter until it blinded my eyes. She came forward and touched the ring finger of my hand and magically a thin gold band appeared. It had two hands clasped together with a heart in between. I immediately recognized it as a claddagh. It glowed and felt warm as it adjusted to my finger.
What a beautiful gift. I thanked the Princess. Then she held her small hand up and instantly a small prayer box appeared. It was made of sterling silver and embossed with a claddagh as well. The Princess put it into my hand. It was so small.
She raised her hands for silence as she began to speak to me. She said,”When you have need of help from above, write your prayer and place it in this prayer box and it will be answered.” “It may not be the answer that you are praying for, but it will in the end be the right answer that you need.”
All I could do was nod my head because I was so overwhelmed by these gifts.
She said,” Should you ever need us for any reason , come to the glen and rub that ring and we will know that you are here and someone will come.” “Come and visit us as often as you like for we would like to learn all about you and I know you will enjoy learning about us too.”
With these final words the Faerie Princess lifted off of my hand and with her other faeries flew into the forest.
I sat there for quite awhile just enjoying the moment and looking at my ring and my tiny prayer box.
I slowly got up and started to walk back to my home. I felt so lighthearted and happy. I would love having these friendly faeries living in my glen. Most of all , I will enjoy visiting them often.
