Hi guys, I was just wondering how you all think of God, Buddha, Allah, or whoever else it is you believe in?
For me, I guess God isn't a person, or anything that resembles a person. It's the power all around us. It's an essence more than anything, a prescence. Something great and wonderful that knows us all as much as he/she/it is a mystery to us. It's a being that is always unfathomably, inexplicably- there.
I guess with religion, I don't follow all the rules to the letter. I mean, a God that is hard to believe in is the God that, if we do wrong, sends us all to hell. Or the God that wants to be praised and exalted all the time. Isn't pride one of the seven deadly sins? So I guess with religion, I have my own beliefs and centre a lot around that.
What about you guys, how stringent are you?
Sarah.

I have my own sense of faith too, I am not overly religious but as I said in another post, I do believe in a higher power and for me God is a supreme being, more of a spirit than a person. I do not buy into God being a punisher of sins and what not, I truely believe God is a giving and loving being/spirit that gives mankind the ultimate freedom of choice and it is up to us to make our lives better.
Great question, Sarah:)

good question:)
I see him more as a guiding spirit. I do not feel He is vengeful in anyway, that is man's spin on things, not God's:)

I find that there's barely enough room inside my own skin to entertain this concept called me, let alone fit one of some holistic God!
What I do wonder though, is why and how people genderise these God things which no-one's ever seen?
(No insult meant whatsoever ... religion is a very personal choice which I respect as such)

Consider:
We refer to nature as being of a Mother's Nature ... (Only a woman can (and should always) gestate and nurture human life genetically)
I've no doubt whatsoever that Mother Nature even puts God (social polity) back in its place when it's out of alignment!
PS: the chicken and the egg argument can't exist nor proceed logically without both being present and equally the first of their one and only true nature!

I agree it is odd that most people always refer to God as Him, no one can be sure, I guess. I was gonna say him or her but shyed away from it for some reason:)

Cool... so why is it that no-one seems to disagree with Satan being a Man?
PS: and if Eve was created from Adams rib, where'd the image of woman come from?
PPS: She now costs an arm and a leg (JOKE)

I believe that God is neither male nor female, they are mortal categories. God is androgynous is how I think of it.

When I was little (like 4 years old) I thought of God as a man with long black hair, a beard and a very low voice...a lot of children seem to have that image, kinda funny isn't it?
But right now I don't have an image of God at all, because I'm still trying to figure things out for myself.

I don't have one, but it's interesting to read about other people's images of God. Interesting question. Oh and Kam, you're right...a lot of kids have that image of a man with a beard...I never thought about God like that though. When I was that young I was afraid of God, because at school they told us that he is everywhere and I probably didn't like that Now I just don't believe in God, at least not in the way he is described in the Bible.

OOOO ... did someone mention God is androgynous with a beard??? MMMM....Boy George would look so cute in a goatee'
I was brought up in a very asexual Catholic environment which imbued a Christianity begins at home policy. As I got older I refuted God and Church but maintained the christian charity and mercy edicts. Mind you thought, I still feel a bit guilty about feeding the chickens in public places way back then ...*smile*
