The Cove If you want to read the poem listening to the music as it was written with, click here and then minimize [Stairway to Heaven.midi]
Heart raising a hollow mist to the heavens In the cove this sultry summer’s morning. Thoughts quicken to brightly colored sail boats Sitting quietly in their moorings. Bobbing about to and fro With Masts reaching tall into the fog. Tethered to land and to each other They Dance effortlessly in the waves.
Farther out into deeper waters larger vessels Move slowly about the harbor. Some anchored awaiting to unburden their bloated bellies While others sit high in the water to take on new cargo. Each with a scurry of movement about its decks With preparation for the choirs of today’s tasks. The pier becoming the object of their labors.
My mind dissected by the peacefulness of the sailboats and Transgressed by the labors of the larger vessels. A frightfully busy place is the harbor. A tranquil loving place is the cove. A visual blend of both seemingly distant worlds Lies before me and indulges my mind into each. I wonder…. Am I as the sailboat tethered safely to the shore Or am I in the harbor scurrying about to take on The next heavy load. The mystery hidden in the blanketing fog.
Walking across the small dock Feet capture the movement of my sailboat. I remove her tether from mother earth And she, I in her belly, slowly move away from her bindings. No longer restrained sails slip us from the cove And into the harbor. The sun rising with a new day The veiling fog lifts to reveal the answered Question of this mornings pre-dawn endeavor.
The difference between the cove and the harbor Lies not in the depth of the water. The depth need not to be frightening. Looking back into the cove from the harbor I find that what I have brought with me Has made all the difference.

This poem is wonderfully orchestrated. I could see this as just the kind of scene that Lyn chose and also as a spiritual allegory. The vessels, bearer of spirit in their different and diverse settings, different journeys and purposes.
Some boats are in the pretty and relaxed cove, gently partying together as they dance effortlessly, spontaneous, safe and happy, unperturbed by anything other than their own delights until their next adventure. Others with heavy-duty business to attend to are moored in a greater harbour, still within the parameters, for now. Everything they do is purposeful. Maybe some are moored for repair, maybe it is just not the right time for them to voyage beyond, maybe for now they are in between jobs. There is no judgement here, it is just how it is. Two views of spirit life? The messianic contrasting the individual, perhaps *grin.
Then there is your small sailboat boat. Maybe it only seems small because your spirit is so vast and the ocean is even more so? Maybe it is the nature of your life choice. You aren’t setting out to save the world but you are setting out nonetheless. I like the sense of identifying with the guiding wind here … there is a tremendous feeling of freedom there, of meeting challenge directly and Naturally. As always, to work a sailboat requires co-operation; one works WITH the elements, one cannot dominate them.
The last stanza pulls it all together beautifully, the movement of spirit, life-choices and the resolution of fear when the mist lifts (the awakening)
The last two lines are superb! The gem of wisdom and personal courage/power is revealed at last and the voyage can begin, when the traveler is ready, not a moment before and best of all, the drive/motivation for the quest was within all the time. The move from cove to harbour is a moment of great affirmation ... like, "bring it on" ...
I love this poem. The joy of life and purpose, the delight in choosing self-expression and "mission", the sheer beauty of life itself is all here ... wonderfully so .. this is a poem that is in love with Life!!
*Sandman .. i know you have seen this comment before but i could not let this poem go uncommented *grin ... hopefully i have edited a little for greater clarity ... not a chance of editing for brevity with me, eh? LOL
